What is SMART Recovery
At the Liberation Place, I believe in working, with both myself and my clients, from the principle that acceptance is a massive part of learning how to live the life I want to live. Not only working on accepting myself, and all the different parts of my personality, but also learning how to accept other people, and the world around me, knowing that I cannot change what is out of my control. brings a sense of harmony to my intenrla sace as I am no longer fighting with my desire to be right. Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) uses the principles of Unconditional Acceptance of Self, Others, and the World as one of its core concepts, and REBT is the primary skill base that is used in the SMART Recovery program. This is why I took the training to become a SMART Recovery facilitator, and while I no longer facilitate SMART meetings myself, I highly recommend the program as a way to build a solid foundation for your own recovery journey.
The following is taken from the SMART Recovery program, available online:
"SMART Recovery is a fresh approach to addiction recovery. SMART stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training. This is more than an acronym: it is a transformative method of moving from addictive substances and negative behaviors to a life of positive self-regard and willingness to change. Far too many people feel powerless over their lives and carry a sense of futility, a dread of staying trapped within an addiction pattern and locked into their circumstances. SMART helps them learn the skills they need to overcome their addictions and transform their lives."
"SMART was created for people seeking a self-empowering way to overcome addictive problems. What has emerged is an accessible method of recovery, one grounded in science and proven by more than a quarter-century of experience teaching practical tools that encourage lasting change. SMART is a powerful recovery community that includes passionate volunteers who recovered with SMART who are driven to help others. Peers and professionals working together fuse science and experience to help people build healthy and balanced lives."
"SMART Recovery’s approach to behavioral change is built around our 4-Point Program:
1. Building and maintaining the motivation to change.
2. Coping with urges to use.
3. Managing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in an effective way without addictive behaviors.
4. Living a balanced, positive, and healthy life."
