Dr. Jeffrey Young

Snapshot 15

Dr. Jeffrey Young is an American Psychologist who was the primary developer, and creator of Schema Therapy, along with being the founder of the Schema Therapy Institute. Schema Therapy was developed for use in the treatment of personality disorders and the many different mental health and substance related issues that fall under the Axis I continuum. Schema Therapy is typically used with clients who have failed to respond or relapse after having been through other, more traditional therapies, like Cognitive Therapy or Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy.

Dr. Young was educated at Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania, where he completed his postdoctoral studies under the guidance of Doctor Aaron Beck, founder of the Beck Institute and someone who many consider to be the father of CBT. Dr. Young has written a number of different books on the approach of both Cognitive Therapy and Schema Therapy, the most well known of which are Schema Therapy, a practitioners guide, which is a detailed manual for therapists, and Reinventing Your Life, a Self-help book for the general public.
